The Complete Guide to WHOOP Age Explained

WHOOP Age is a wellness estimate of how your daily habits compare with long-term health recommendations, shown as an age in years. If it is lower than your actual age, your recent habits are ahead of those recommendations. If it is higher, they are behind. I have used a WHOOP for over two years and Healthspan, the feature that produces WHOOP Age, is the part of the app that changed my daily choices the most.

This guide explains what WHOOP Age is, how it is calculated, which habits move it, what it costs to access in South Africa and where its limits lie. I draw on WHOOP's own Healthspan documentation and my personal experience. I am not a medical professional and nothing here is medical advice.

What WHOOP Age and Healthspan are

Healthspan is the WHOOP feature that turns nine measurements of your sleep, activity and fitness into two outputs: WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging. WHOOP describes it as a wellness estimate and not a medical or diagnostic test.

The idea behind it is simple. Most people know their calendar age. Few know whether their habits are helping or hurting their long-term health. WHOOP Age gives you a single figure that sums up the direction of travel.

WHOOP Age compared with your actual age

According to WHOOP, the comparison works like this:

  • If your WHOOP Age is below your actual age, you are exceeding long-term health recommendations.
  • If it matches your actual age, you are meeting them.
  • If it is above your actual age, you are falling short of them.

It is not a prediction of how long you will live. It is a way of expressing habits as years so that the effect of each one is easier to grasp.

Healthspan is not the same as lifespan

Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how long you stay in good health. The WHOOP feature borrows the name because it focuses on behaviours that are linked in published research with healthier ageing. It does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.

How WHOOP Age is calculated

WHOOP Age is built from published research on all-cause mortality, which is the standard outcome used in ageing studies. Each metric is converted into years that are added to or subtracted from your age.

WHOOP states that for each metric it uses hazard ratios from published studies and converts your risk into years. WHOOP Age is the sum of those age impacts.

Why overlapping metrics are adjusted

Some inputs are related. VO2 max and resting heart rate, for example, often move together. WHOOP adjusts for this so the same benefit is not counted twice. This matters because it stops a single good habit from inflating the result.

What the calculation cannot see

WHOOP Age only reflects the nine inputs. It does not include your family history, your diet quality or your medical history. WHOOP also states that Advanced Labs biomarkers do not affect WHOOP Age or Pace of Aging. A good score is therefore not proof of good health and a poor score is not proof of poor health.

The nine inputs and their targets

WHOOP Age uses nine inputs, each with a target. The figures below are the targets WHOOP lists for younger adults. Several change with age.

Input Target for younger adults
Sleep duration 7 to 9 hours a night
Sleep consistency At least 70%
Steps 8,000 a day (5,600 for older adults)
Heart Rate Zones 1 to 3 70 to 100 minutes a week
Heart Rate Zones 4 to 5 7 to 10 minutes a week
Strength activity 40 minutes a week
VO2 max Above 38 ml/kg/min for a 30-year-old woman and above 44 for a 30-year-old man
Resting heart rate Below 64 bpm for women and below 60 bpm for men
Lean body mass Above 67% for women and 80% for men

Lean body mass only counts when body composition data is available. Targets for steps, zone time, VO2 max and lean body mass change with age, so your own targets will differ from the table.

The sleep inputs

Two of the nine inputs relate to sleep: how long you sleep and how consistently you sleep. Consistency is about going to bed and waking at similar times. It is often the easier of the two to improve because it costs nothing. If you want a deeper explanation of how WHOOP measures sleep, my guide to WHOOP recovery, strain and sleep covers it.

The activity inputs

Steps, heart rate zone time and strength activity make up three further inputs. Zone time depends on your personalised heart rate zones. WHOOP notes that changing your zone method or your maximum heart rate can therefore change your WHOOP Age. If your number shifts after you adjust those settings, that is the likely reason.

The fitness inputs

VO2 max, resting heart rate and lean body mass describe your fitness and body composition. These move slowly. A consistent training routine over months is what shifts them, not a single good week.

Pace of Aging explained

Pace of Aging shows how quickly your WHOOP Age is changing, based on your last 30 days. WHOOP compares it to a speedometer for WHOOP Age.

It projects your last 30 days forward six months and compares that with your current WHOOP Age. The scale runs from -1.0x to 3.0x.

Pace of Aging What WHOOP says it means
Above 1.0x Accelerated ageing
Exactly 1.0x Steady
0.0x to 1.0x Slowing
Below 0.0x Reversing

Why Pace of Aging is the more useful number day to day

WHOOP Age averages six months of data, so it moves slowly. Pace of Aging uses 30 days, so it responds sooner. If you have just changed your sleep routine or started training, Pace of Aging is where you will see it first.

How often the numbers update

Both WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging update weekly, on Sundays. You will not see them change from one day to the next.

Pace of Aging can swing from week to week because it uses 30 days of data. WHOOP Age is steadier. A good approach is to look at the trend over a month and not react to a single Sunday.

What you need to unlock Healthspan

Healthspan needs the right membership, enough recorded data and an adult user. These are the conditions WHOOP lists on its Healthspan page:

  • It is included in the WHOOP Peak and WHOOP Life memberships.
  • It is not available to anyone under 18.
  • It unlocks after 21 Recoveries within your first 31 days.
  • To keep it updating, you need 21 Recoveries in every 31-day period.
  • Full calibration takes 90 days, so WHOOP Age can shift more sharply in the first few weeks.

A Recovery is recorded when you wear the device overnight and it captures your sleep. In practice this means wearing it most nights. If you often take it off to charge for long periods, you may miss the threshold.

Which devices work

WHOOP lists Healthspan as working on the WHOOP 4.0, the WHOOP 5.0 and the WHOOP MG. I would only buy a current device. If you are choosing between the current models, read my WHOOP 5.0 and MG review first.

Is it available in South Africa?

I did not find any country restriction on WHOOP's Healthspan page and WHOOP operates a South Africa store at whoop.com/za. Feature availability can differ by region and can change, so please confirm on the WHOOP website before you buy. I am not claiming any regulatory clearance for any feature.

How I used WHOOP Age

I used the Healthspan feature to guide lifestyle changes and my WHOOP Age came down significantly. That is my personal experience and not a promise of what it will do for you.

I have worn a WHOOP for over two years. I train for running, but I also use it for general daily life, mainly to understand which behaviours are good or bad for me. WHOOP helped me understand my sleep patterns during a period of insomnia and my sleep improved over time. I also lost weight while wearing it and I gained a clearer understanding of how my body responds to training.

The value for me was not the number itself. It was seeing which inputs were pulling the number up. Once a habit is shown as years, it becomes easier to decide what is worth changing first. If you have concerns about your sleep or your health, please speak to a doctor. A wearable is a tool for awareness and not a substitute for medical care.

Habits that move WHOOP Age

The habits that move WHOOP Age are the ones tied to the nine inputs. Some are quick to change and some take months.

Quick wins

  • Sleep consistency: choose a bedtime and wake time window and keep to it, including weekends.
  • Sleep duration: aim for the 7 to 9 hour range by moving bedtime earlier.
  • Daily steps: a walk after a meal is an easy way to reach 8,000 steps.
  • Strength sessions: two short sessions a week can reach the 40 minute target.

Slower changes

  • VO2 max: improved through regular aerobic training over months.
  • Resting heart rate: usually falls gradually as fitness improves.
  • Lean body mass: changes with strength training and nutrition over a long period.

A sensible order of attention

Start with sleep because it takes the fewest resources. Add steps next. Then build the training inputs. This order keeps the effort realistic and avoids the common mistake of changing everything in the first week.

Running and WHOOP Age

If you run, the zone targets are worth understanding. The weekly minutes in Zones 1 to 3 reward easy, steady running. The minutes in Zones 4 to 5 reward short hard efforts. For more on this, see my guide on WHOOP 5.0 for cyclists and runners.

A simple four-week plan to improve your inputs

A gradual plan works better than a dramatic overhaul. Each week below adds one change and leaves the earlier ones in place.

  1. Week one: fix the sleep window. Pick a bedtime and a wake time that give you 7 to 9 hours in bed. Keep to it every day, including weekends. Do not change anything else yet.
  2. Week two: add walking. Work towards 8,000 steps a day. Short walks after meals and a few minutes of walking during calls add up quickly.
  3. Week three: add strength work. Schedule two sessions that together reach about 40 minutes a week. Bodyweight work is enough to begin with.
  4. Week four: add easy aerobic time. Build towards 70 to 100 minutes a week in Zones 1 to 3, then review your Pace of Aging on Sunday.

After four weeks, look at which input moved most. Then decide what to keep. Do not expect a large change in VO2 max or lean body mass in a month because those inputs respond slowly.

Who benefits most from WHOOP Age

WHOOP Age suits people who respond well to a clear number and a weekly rhythm. It is less useful if numbers make you anxious or if you tend to over-train.

People it tends to suit

  • Adults who want a simple summary of whether their habits are improving.
  • Runners and gym users who already train and want to see the wider picture.
  • People who like weekly check-ins and gradual progress.

People who should be cautious

  • Anyone who becomes anxious about health numbers. A wearable should support your wellbeing and not add stress.
  • Anyone with a medical condition. Please speak to your doctor before changing your exercise or sleep routine.
  • Anyone under 18, as the feature is not available to them.

How WHOOP Age fits with the rest of your WHOOP data

WHOOP Age is the long-term view, while Recovery, Strain and Sleep are the daily view. The two work best together.

Recovery tells you how ready your body is today. Strain records how much load you have taken on. Sleep records how well you rested. WHOOP Age takes the underlying behaviours and shows whether they add up to better long-term habits. If you only look at WHOOP Age, you may miss the daily signals. If you only look at daily scores, you may miss the trend.

I check the daily scores to decide how hard to train and the weekly Healthspan update to judge whether my routine is working. This split keeps the daily decisions simple. It also stops one poor night from feeling like a setback.

Common mistakes when reading the number

The most common mistake is treating WHOOP Age as a verdict. It is an estimate based on nine inputs and it is only as good as the data behind it.

Reacting to one week

Pace of Aging uses 30 days. A single bad week will not undo a good month and a single good week will not reverse a poor one. Look for direction over several weeks.

Chasing the number instead of the habit

It is possible to hit a target and still feel unwell. If you are exhausted, ill or injured, rest matters more than a Sunday figure. If you feel unwell or are worried about your heart, blood pressure or sleep, speak to a doctor.

Forgetting that settings change the result

Because zone time depends on your heart rate zones, altering your maximum heart rate or zone method can move your WHOOP Age. Change those settings deliberately and note the date.

Comparing with other people

Targets depend on age and sex. A friend with a lower WHOOP Age is not necessarily healthier than you. Compare yourself with your own trend.

Cost and availability in South Africa

Healthspan requires WHOOP Peak or WHOOP Life. On the WHOOP South Africa page I checked on 17 October 2026, memberships were listed in US dollars per year, with no rand pricing shown.

Membership Price per year (USD) Approximate ZAR Includes Healthspan
WHOOP One US$199 R3,280 No
WHOOP Peak US$239 R3,939 Yes
WHOOP Life US$359 R5,918 Yes

The rand figures are approximate, using an exchange rate of 16.48 on 16 October 2026. Prices and exchange rates change, so please check the current figures before you buy. Source: whoop.com/za.

The same page states a 1-month free trial of Peak membership with a WHOOP device and charger included. I could not read the offer terms on the affiliate join page on the day of writing, so please confirm the current offer before you check out. For a full breakdown of plans, see my guide to WHOOP membership cost in South Africa.

The page did not show hardware prices, shipping costs or import VAT, so I have not quoted them. My guide to how to buy WHOOP in South Africa explains the buying process step by step.

Honest buying notes

Buying direct from WHOOP has trade-offs that are worth weighing before you commit. I would rather you know them in advance.

  • Delivery time and tracking: the device ships from outside South Africa, so delivery takes longer than a local order. Check the tracking options offered at checkout.
  • Import VAT: it may be charged at checkout where applicable. I could not confirm the current treatment on an official WHOOP page, so check the total before paying.
  • Membership is required: the device does not work without an active membership. For Healthspan you need Peak or Life.
  • Returns, warranty and support: buying direct means dealing with WHOOP support and its return policy, which can be less convenient than returning something to a South African retailer. Read the policy before ordering.

None of this is a reason to avoid buying. It is a reason to decide with the full picture.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good WHOOP Age?

A WHOOP Age below your actual age means you are exceeding long-term health recommendations, according to WHOOP. A matching age means you are meeting them. There is no single good number because it depends on your age.

Is WHOOP Age accurate?

It is an estimate built from nine inputs and published research and WHOOP describes it as a wellness estimate and not a medical test. Treat it as a guide to your habits and not as a health assessment.

How long does it take for WHOOP Age to appear?

Healthspan unlocks after 21 Recoveries within your first 31 days. Full calibration takes 90 days, so expect the number to move more in the first few weeks.

Does WHOOP Age work on the WHOOP One membership?

No. WHOOP states that Healthspan is included in Peak and Life memberships.

Should you get WHOOP for WHOOP Age?

If the idea of seeing your habits as years appeals to you, Healthspan is a clear reason to choose a Peak or Life membership. If you only want basic sleep and recovery tracking, the cheaper plan may be enough. You can review the current plans and offer through my WHOOP join link. My bundle page for the WHOOP 5.0 with 12-month subscription in South Africa is another option to compare.
