How Long Does the WHOOP 5.0 Battery Last?
Share
WHOOP states an estimated battery life of 14 days for the WHOOP 5.0 and the WHOOP MG. In real use, owners report anything from about a week to the full two weeks, depending on settings and firmware. I would plan on charging roughly once a week and treat a longer gap as a bonus.

This is a focused answer to one question. For the full picture of the devices and plans, read my hub guide, The Complete Guide to the WHOOP 5.0 and MG: A South African Review. I have worn a WHOOP every day for over two years, so I care about how often it needs charging more than most specifications.
How long does the WHOOP 5.0 battery actually last?
The claimed figure is 14 days and some independent tests come close to it. Engadget reported the same estimated 14-day battery life for both the 5.0 and the MG at launch, which it described as ten times the power efficiency of the WHOOP 4.0.
Owner reports on the official WHOOP community are more mixed. One owner was on track for the full fortnight, with 50% left after seven days. Others reported around seven days from a full charge, and one reported losing 19% in 48 hours. I have not run my own controlled test, so I rely on these reports and on the reviews below.
| Source | What it reported |
|---|---|
| WHOOP (via Engadget) | Estimated 14-day battery life |
| Wareable review | 38% used after six days |
| Tom's Guide review | 27% left after two weeks |
| WHOOP community owners | From about 3.5 days to the full 14 days |
The review figures are as quoted in my hub guide. The spread tells you something useful: the claim is achievable, but it is not guaranteed.
What makes the battery drain faster?
The setting that owners and WHOOP staff mention most is Heart Rate Broadcast. A WHOOP staff member said on the community forum that this feature can drain the battery faster when it is switched on. You find it in the app under More, then Device Settings.
Other factors owners mention include:
- Phone energy saving modes that may interfere with syncing.
- Firmware versions, since some owners saw fast drain even on the latest update.
- A possible fault, which support can check from their side.
Not every case is explained by these. Some owners with broadcast switched off still saw shorter life, so treat the list as things to check and not as a guaranteed fix.
How do you charge a WHOOP 5.0?
What you charge with depends on your plan. Based on the membership details in my hub guide, One includes a basic wired charger and Peak and Life include the Wireless PowerPack. WHOOP lists these details on its membership page and they may change, so check the box contents at checkout.
The practical point is that you charge while wearing the band. The battery pack clips on, so you do not need to take the device off. That is why gaps in data are rare compared with older trackers that had to be removed and left on a charger.
What I do about battery in daily use
I pick a regular charging moment and stick to it, so the battery is never a surprise. For me that is a quiet point in the week when I am at my desk. This is a habit and not a WHOOP rule.
If your battery seems to fall faster than the reports above, work through this order:
- Check whether Heart Rate Broadcast is on and switch it off if you do not need it.
- Update the firmware in the app.
- Reboot the device from the app.
- Contact WHOOP support at support@whoop.com if the drain continues, since they can check from their side and may offer a replacement for a fault.
Is the battery different on the WHOOP MG?
WHOOP gives the same estimated 14 days for the MG as for the 5.0. The difference between the two devices lies in the heart features and not the battery. My post on WHOOP MG vs 5.0 covers what each one adds.
How does WHOOP battery life compare with a smartwatch?
A WHOOP lasts longer between charges than a typical smartwatch, mainly because it has no screen. A smartwatch usually needs charging every few days, while WHOOP aims for one to two weeks.
The trade-off is that you give up the display, notifications and on-device workout views. If you want those, a smartwatch is the better fit even with the more frequent charging. My post on WHOOP vs Apple Watch compares the two in more detail.
What happens to your data if the battery runs flat?
If the battery runs out, the device stops recording until you charge it again, so that period is missing from your sleep, strain and recovery history. This is the main practical reason to keep a charging habit.
In my experience a regular weekly slot avoids almost all gaps. That is a personal habit and not an official recommendation. The longer the gap between charges, the more you lose if you forget.
Should battery life decide which plan you buy?
Not really, because the claimed battery life is the same across the 5.0 and the MG. The plan decides the charger and the features, so choose on those. My hub guide explains how the One, Peak and Life plans differ.
Honest buying notes for South Africa
Battery life is easier to live with than the other trade-offs of buying direct, but those still matter.
- Delivery time and tracking: international orders are trackable but slower than a local order.
- Import VAT: where it applies, it is paid at checkout. Rely on your checkout total.
- Membership is required: the device does not work without an active plan.
- Returns, warranty and local support: buying direct means dealing with WHOOP support online. A local retailer offers a shop to visit but has its own policy. If battery faults worry you, ask how a replacement would work.
My step-by-step guide to buying WHOOP in South Africa covers the ordering process.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the WHOOP 5.0 battery last?
WHOOP estimates 14 days. Owner reports range from about a week to the full two weeks.
Can I charge WHOOP while wearing it?
Yes. The battery pack clips onto the device so you can keep wearing it while it charges.
Why is my WHOOP 5.0 battery draining fast?
Heart Rate Broadcast is a common cause according to WHOOP staff. Also check firmware and phone settings, then contact support if it continues.
Does battery life get worse over time?
Some owners on the community forum report that life dropped suddenly after a period of normal use. I cannot say how common that is. If it happens to you, follow the checks above and contact support, since a replacement may be offered for a fault.
Do I need to take the WHOOP off to charge it?
No. You can wear it while the battery pack is attached, which keeps your sleep and strain data continuous.
Ready to try WHOOP?
If a battery that lasts a week or more suits you, you can review the plans and current terms on the WHOOP join page before you pay.
