What to Do If Your WHOOP Is Stuck in Customs in South Africa

If your WHOOP is stuck in customs in South Africa, the usual fix is to find out exactly what the courier is waiting for, then send one complete set of documents. Most holds come from unpaid import charges, a vague description or a value that customs wants proof of. I have used a WHOOP daily for over two years, and this post sets out what I would check first and what I would avoid doing.

This is a short troubleshooting guide. For the whole process from ordering to clearance, read my complete guide to importing WHOOP to South Africa.

Is it normal for a WHOOP to pause at customs?

Yes, a pause at customs is a normal stage for an imported parcel and does not mean it is lost. Tracking often shows the parcel moving internationally, then sitting at South African clearance for a while before final delivery.

WHOOP's terms of sale state that estimated delivery dates are not guaranteed, so a delay on its own is not a fault. I could not confirm a customs timeframe for WHOOP parcels from an official source, so I will not give a number of days.

Common reasons a parcel is held

Most holds fall into a few categories, and the courier can usually tell you which one applies to you. The list below is based on a South African retailer's explanation of customs delays, which I have read but cannot verify independently.

Reason What it means What you can do
Unpaid charges Import VAT or courier fees have not been settled Check email and SMS for a payment request
Vague description The invoice does not describe the item clearly Ask the courier what is missing
Value query Customs wants proof of the declared value Send your order confirmation and payment record
Inspection The parcel was selected for a physical check Wait for the outcome and keep in touch with the courier

The source for that table is the Evetech article on what speeds up a parcel stuck in customs. It notes that paying duty does not stop an inspection, because the two are separate controls.

What to do first

Start with the courier, because they handle clearance on your behalf. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Open the tracking link from your WHOOP order confirmation and note the latest status.
  2. Search your email inbox and spam folder for messages from the courier.
  3. Check your phone for SMS messages asking for an ID number or a payment.
  4. Contact the courier and ask for the exact hold status and any customs reference number.
  5. Ask what is still outstanding and who must act next.
  6. Send your documents in one go through the channel the courier names.

Write down the reference number and the name of the person you spoke to. It saves time if you have to call again.

Which documents to have ready

You need proof that matches what was declared on the parcel. Keep digital copies of each of these.

  • Your WHOOP order confirmation email.
  • Proof of payment from your bank or card statement.
  • The invoice, if the courier asks for one.
  • Your ID number, if requested for the clearance.

If the invoice is wrong, ask the seller for a corrected version. Never change an invoice yourself and never ask anyone to under-declare the value. That is unlawful and can leave you with a seized parcel.

How import VAT fits in

Import VAT is a common reason a parcel waits, so it helps to know how it is worked out. SARS states that VAT is paid on the Added Tax Value, which is the customs value plus any duty plus 10% of the customs value. The VAT rate applied to that figure is 15%. You can read the wording on the SARS page on VAT on imported goods.

I could not confirm from an official WHOOP page whether WHOOP collects South African import VAT at checkout. If your checkout showed no tax line, expect the courier to ask for payment. My post on whether WHOOP ships to South Africa explains how to check your own total before you pay.

What not to do

A few common reactions slow things down or add cost. Avoid these.

  • Do not call the courier repeatedly without new information. It does not move the file.
  • Do not guess a tariff code from a forum. Classification is the declarant's job.
  • Do not refuse delivery without checking the return terms first. Return costs and import charges can still apply.
  • Do not ignore storage deadlines. Ask when free storage ends.

When to contact WHOOP support

Contact WHOOP if the parcel looks lost, if tracking has not updated for a long time or if the courier says the shipper's paperwork is wrong. WHOOP is the seller, so it can supply a corrected document or open a trace with the carrier. Give them your order number and the courier reference.

WHOOP's terms also say that you are responsible for following the laws where you live. That includes paying any import charges that apply to your order.

Honest buying notes

Customs delays are one of the real trade-offs of buying direct, and a local purchase avoids them. These are the points I weigh.

  • Delivery time and tracking: You get tracking but not a guaranteed date. A local retailer may have stock available now.
  • Import VAT: It applies to imports. Confirm at your own checkout whether it is charged there or by the courier.
  • Membership: A WHOOP needs an active membership to work, so budget for the plan as well as the device.
  • Returns, warranty and local support: These are handled by WHOOP and not by a South African shop. An international return takes more effort.

If those points matter more than the saving, buying from a South African retailer is a sensible choice. My post on returning a WHOOP in South Africa covers the return side in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a WHOOP stay in customs in South Africa?

I could not find an official timeframe. Holds can clear quickly once charges and documents are in order, and they last longer when a value query or inspection applies. Ask the courier for the hold status instead of waiting.

Do I have to pay anything to release my WHOOP?

Possibly. Import VAT and any courier clearance fee may be due before release. Your checkout page and the courier's message show what applies to your parcel.

Can I cancel my WHOOP order while it is in customs?

Contact WHOOP support and ask. I could not confirm a cancellation rule for parcels already in transit, so do not assume you can stop it.

Ready to order with the details in mind?

If you would like to review the current plans and see your own checkout total before you commit, you can start from the WHOOP join page. If you prefer to buy through the store, the WHOOP 5.0 with 12-month subscription page has the details.
